Change the owner of a Stripe account

The current owner of a Stripe account can transfer ownership to someone else by transferring to an existing Super Administrator or Administrator, or to a new individual. In Brazil, ownership transfer is not allowed for individual or sole proprietorship accounts. If the current owner is no longer with the company or the Owner Administrator account is inaccessible, contact Stripe Support for assistance and provide the necessary documentation and authorization.


The current owner of a Stripe account can transfer ownership to someone else, depending on the user's existing account access and permissions. They might need to transfer ownership if someone is leaving their organization, or if the responsibility of Stripe account ownership is shifting.

For Stripe accounts in Brazil, the transfer of ownership is not allowed in case of individual or sole proprietorship accounts (linked to a CPF). Learn more about updating tax information in Brazil.

How to transfer account ownership

To an existing user

  1. Go to your Team settings on the Dashboard.
  2. Locate the user you want to make the new account owner and click the overflow menu.
  3. The next steps depend on whether the user is already a Super Administrator or Administrator.
    • If they are: From the popup, choose the option to Transfer ownership to this user. If they are an Administrator of the account, they become a Super Administrator after the ownership transfer.
    • If they are not:
      1. Set their role to Super Administrator and click Save.
      2. Click the overflow menu again for the same user and from the popup, select Transfer ownership and follow the instructions.

To a new individual

  1. Go to Team settings on the Dashboard .
  2. Click +New Member.
  3. Add the new user’s email address and set their role to Super Administrator.
  4. Click Save to send them an invitation to join the account.
  5. After the new user has accepted the invite, go back to Team settings.
  6. Click the overflow menu next to their name.
  7. From the popup, select Transfer ownership and follow the instructions.

What if the current account owner is no longer with the company?

Only the current owner of a Stripe account can transfer ownership. If that person is no longer with the company, reach out to Stripe Support.
