# Change the owner of a Stripe account

You might need to transfer ownership if someone is leaving the organization or if the responsibility of Stripe account ownership is shifting. The current owner of a Stripe account can transfer ownership to another user.
For Stripe accounts in Brazil, the transfer of ownership **is not allowed** in case of individual or sole proprietorship accounts (linked to a CPF). Learn more about updating tax information in Brazil.
## How to transfer account ownership
Owners can transfer ownership to user's with the **Administrator** or **Super Administrator** role.
### Transfer to an existing user
1. Go to your [Team settings](https://dashboard.stripe.com/account/team) on the Dashboard.
1. Locate the user you want to make the new account owner and click the overflow menu.
1. The user must  have the **Super Administrator** or **Administrator** role.  Set their role to **Super Administrator** and click **Save**.
   * **Administrators** become a **Super Administrator** after the ownership transfer.
1. Click the overflow menu again for the same user and from the popup, select **Transfer ownership** and follow the instructions.
### Transfer to a new individual
1. Go to [Team settings](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/team) on the Dashboard .
1. Click **+New Member**.
1. Add the new user’s email address and set their role to **Super Administrator**.
1. Click **Save** to send them an invitation to join the account.
1. After the new user has accepted the invite, go back to [Team settings](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/team).
1. Click the overflow menu next to their name.
1. From the popup, select **Transfer ownership** and follow the instructions.

## What if the current account owner is no longer with the company?
If the current owner is no longer available, you can still request an ownership transfer by contacting [Stripe Support](https://support.stripe.com/email). A secure link will be shared to guide you through a digital verification process.
As part of this process, you'll be asked to:
* Verify your identity
* Verify your relationship with the business
The existing account owner and administrators will be notified by email and SMS when a transfer request is initiated. They can cancel the request at any point before it is finalized.
Once verification is successfully completed, we will review and process the transfer.
Stripe no longer uses PII verification calls for this process. If you encounter any issues during the verification process, a support agent will assist you in completing the steps.
