What happens if my Stripe Terminal reader is tampered?
Understanding tamper
A tampered device may be compromised and unsafe to use.
This can occur if the reader was:
- Physically shaken
- Dropped
- Subject to attempted unauthorized access
If your terminal reader detects a possible security breach, it will display a tampered message.
If you see this message, immediately stop using the device and contact Stripe or your platform. The terminal reader will need replacement.
Smart reader: S700, WisePOS E
If you see on-screen messages like those shown on the BBPOS WisePOS E or Stripe Reader S700, your device has detected a tamper and entered a tampered state.
Mobile readers: Stripe Reader M2, WisePad 3
Indications
- SDK integration: A TerminalException with TerminalErrorCode READER_TAMPERED indicates your device is compromised
- Stripe Reader M2: Rapid flashing of first and last LEDs (every 0.1 seconds for 30 seconds) indicates tampering
- WisePad 3: Displays a tamper detected screen error and becomes unavailable
What to do next
Once tampered, the reader's payment keys are automatically erased for security.
- Replacement Required: The device must be replaced and cannot be reactivated.
- Warranty Claims:
- If under warranty, contact Stripe support with your device's serial number.
- If purchased through a Connect platform, contact your platform provider directly.
