Refund fee changes for businesses on IC+ pricing

In late 2022, Stripe communicated upcoming changes to fees associated with refunds for businesses on network cost plus pricing. These changes will take effect on 1 March 2023. Please refer to the following details to understand how the changes may impact your business.

Changes to refund fees

  • Variable fees for transactions that get refunded: Stripe charges a variable fee for all transactions, and returns this fee for all transactions that get refunded. From March 1, 2023, we will no longer return this fee.

  • Fixed fee [1] for refunds: Stripe charges a fixed fee to your account each time we interact with the card networks on your behalf. This fee is specified in your contract and is intended to cover our costs. A refund, like all other transactions, requires interaction with the card networks through Stripe. Starting March 1, 2023, we will begin charging this fee for all refunds.

Additional Information

  • When will these changes take effect?
These changes will be effective for all refunds initiated after March 1, 2023. We wanted to give businesses ~90-days notice to help them better prepare for this change.

  • I'm a Connect Platform with businesses on Cost+ pricing. What do I need to tell those businesses?
For platforms using Standard Connect: These changes will apply to the Stripe fees for your connected accounts. We will notify your connected accounts about the fee changes directly via email on 8 December 2022.

For platforms using Custom/ Express Connect: These changes will apply to your Stripe fees. You will need to determine the pricing changes for your connected accounts. To inform your approach, the Stripe team can help you better understand the impact of these changes for each of your connected accounts.

  • Do I need to take any action?
These changes will go live automatically starting March 1, 2023 and no action is needed from you.

[1] This fixed fee will be charged on a per-authorization or per-transaction basis, depending on your contract with Stripe.
