In recent years, card networks have increased fees for handling disputes. Because of these costs, a new dispute counter fee will apply when you counter disputes initiated after June 17, 2025 (fee details by country). This fee will be returned if you win. Your existing dispute fee is not changing (fee details by country).
FAQs
How does this new dispute fee differ from existing fees for disputes?
This new fee (fee details by country) will only apply when you counter a dispute and will be returned to you if you win. The existing dispute fee (fee details by country), charged each time you receive a dispute, is not changing.
What can help me offset an increase in my dispute costs?
Stripe takes steps to help businesses prevent and win disputes, and lower costs:
- Reduces fraud with Stripe Radar’s machine learning. Businesses using Radar see a 38% reduction in fraud disputes on average. Radar is free and automatically enabled for businesses on standard pricing.
- Increases your win rates for Visa fraud disputes by 2X on average with support for new Visa rules. Stripe automatically identifies disputes eligible under the new rules and adds supporting evidence for those transactions on your behalf. This feature is already turned on at no extra cost.
- Provides guidance on the best evidence to submit to help increase your win rates. Check out our disputes center to learn more.
In addition, you can also take actions to reduce the number of disputes incurred by your business. These include:
- Communicating clearly and effectively to your customers (e.g., using clear statement descriptors)
- Improving your Stripe integration (e.g., shipping to a verified address only)
- Identifying common fraud indicators and how to get around them (e.g., fake phone numbers or email addresses)
- Using advanced tools to prevent fraud (e.g., Radar for Fraud Teams)

Why is this fee being introduced?
Stripe incurs costs from card networks for handling each dispute. In recent years, these costs have increased. Given rising costs, Stripe is introducing a new fee to counter disputes initiated after June 17, 2025.
Card network fees have increased across the full disputes lifecycle, including:
- Fees for each time a dispute is countered and subsequently lost
- Fees each time a dispute is opened
- Fees each time dispute is accepted
How can I calculate the impact of these fee changes to my business?
The best way to estimate the impact of these changes to your business is to use the Stripe dashboard.
- Go to the Payments section of your Dashboard.
- Click on “Disputes” on the side panel and select your preferred time period.
- Export the list of disputes received in the time period and check all columns.
- In the exported file, filter for “1” in the “Submission Count” column.
- This will give you all the disputes you have countered.
- Then, filter for disputes with “Lost” status.
- This will give you all the disputes you’ve countered and lost in a particular time period.
- Starting June 17, 2025, you will be charged a fee for these types of disputes.
Note: This number will give you an estimate for the impact to your business based on your transactions in the last 12 months. Remember, your dispute history may not be representative of future dispute activity so your fees may vary.
How does this fee apply if I'm using Smart Disputes?
We are gradually rolling out Smart Disputes, a product that uses AI to automatically counter select disputes on your behalf, helping increase your win rates and save time. The new dispute counter fee will be waived when a dispute is countered with Smart Disputes. Sign-up for the waitlist to learn more.
How do these fees apply if part of a dispute is won?
As an example, if there was a $200 transaction where two items were purchased by a cardholder - a shirt for $50 and a pair of pants for $150. If the entire transaction is disputed by the cardholder, the business counters by submitting evidence, and the issuer rules that there is evidence of the $50 shirt being delivered, but not the pants. This would mean that part of the dispute is won. In this case:
- Stripe would return the $50 to the business.
- Stripe would charge a $15 fee at the time of receiving the dispute and $15 at the time of countering the dispute.
- The $15 fees to receive the dispute and to counter the dispute will not be returned.
How does this change affect my connected accounts?
- If you use Stripe Connect, your connected accounts use the Stripe Dashboard, and Stripe manages risk: These changes will apply to the Stripe fees for your connected accounts. Stripe will automatically notify your connected accounts about the changes that affect them. There’s no action needed from you.
- For all other businesses that use Stripe Connect: You are responsible for any updates to your own pricing in line with these changes, and for communicating with your users.
How can I understand which of my connected accounts are impacted?
To understand which of your connected accounts are impacted, please reach out to the Stripe team.
Are there any integration changes needed?
If you use the dashboard to counter all disputes: No changes are needed.
If you use the payments API to counter disputes: You may need to adjust your integration.
- Today, each time you add evidence to counter a dispute, Stripe automatically submits the evidence, countering the dispute before the deadline.
- If you set the submit parameter to
true
, the dispute is countered immediately. If you set it tofalse
, Stripe will not immediately counter the dispute, but will do so just before the deadline. - If you’d like to avoid automatic submissions prior to the deadline, please update your integration to only update the dispute with evidence when you’d like Stripe to submit that evidence.
