# Close a Stripe account

To close a Stripe account, the owner must navigate to **Settings > Business >** [**Account details**](https://dashboard.stripe.com/account) in the Dashboard, ensure they're logged into the correct account, and click **Close account**. Before closing, it's important to pay out any existing balances. Closing a Stripe account doesn't release the owner from any liability related to the account balance. Each Stripe account must be closed individually.

The owner of a Stripe account can close the account by navigating to **Settings > Business >** [**Account details**](https://dashboard.stripe.com/account) in the Dashboard. On the **Account details** page, scroll to the bottom and click **Close account**.

* **Make sure you're logged in to the account that you want to close.** To check which account you are currently logged into, navigate to the top right corner and select the dropdown with your business name on it. You'll see a list of all the accounts associated with your email login. The top account name (selected in purple) is the account you're currently logged into.

* Check that you've paid out any existing balances before closing your Stripe account.
* Once a Stripe account is closed, it can't be reopened.
* We recommend [exporting](https://stripe.com/docs/reports/financial-reports) the data in the account to a CSV file before closing it.
## Additional Information
* **Closing your Stripe account doesn't release you from any liability related to your account balance, including but not limited to negative balances and disputes**. For this reason, we're unable to close accounts with a negative balance. Once you close your Stripe account, you'll no longer be able to process any refunds, issue any payments, or respond to any customer disputes. If you have any reason to believe that you may have further refunds to issue or disputes to respond to, we recommend keeping your account open until those have been resolved.

* Closing one Stripe account will not automatically close any other Stripe accounts you own. If you want to close all of your Stripe accounts, close each account individually.
* **If the Stripe account was created through a** [third-party application](https://stripe.com/works-with), closing it via your Stripe Dashboard won't close your account with the third party. Similarly, deleting an account with a third-party application also does _not_ delete the Stripe account connected to it. The only way to close a Stripe account is from the Stripe Dashboard as outlined above.
* Platforms can allow Express users to self-serve their own account closures.
