Why do you need my date of birth and 4 digits of my Social Security number (SSN)?

Stripe is required to collect, verify, and maintain information on the individuals associated with each US Stripe account. These requirements come from our regulators and financial partners and are intended to promote transparency and prevent individuals from using complex company structures to hide terrorist financing, money laundering, tax evasion, and other financial crimes.

One of the primary reasons we can get users up and running so quickly is our rather unique registration process. We use an individual’s date of birth and last four digits of their SSN to programmatically verify their identity so they can start accepting payments immediately.

We take privacy and security very seriously. Our Privacy Policy explains how and for what purposes we collect, use, retain, disclose, and safeguard any personal data you provide to us.
