Signing up for a US Stripe account without a tax ID or employer ID number
Stripe requires a verifiable Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Social Security Number (SSN) to use their services; individuals without an EIN can use their SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) instead.
You must enter a verifiable Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN)—a Employer Identification Number (EIN) or Social Security Number (SSN)—in order to use Stripe.
Even when using an EIN to verify a business, you are still required to provide the SSN for the individuals associated with every US Stripe account.
If you do not have an EIN, you'll be asked to provide your SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) instead.
If you incorporated your company using Stripe Atlas, you will be able to accept Stripe payments before receiving your EIN from the IRS, and Atlas will associate the EIN with your account when we receive it from the IRS.
Additional information
- If you are unsure of the correct number to enter, consult a tax professional.
- If you have recently applied for a TIN in the US but Stripe was unable to match it against government records, see What to do if your newly-issued US tax ID number (TIN) is not verifying.
- If you are concerned about Stripe’s usage and security of this information, see our Privacy Policy.
