“Know Your Customer” obligations

“Know Your Customer” (KYC) obligations require Stripe to collect and maintain information on all Stripe account holders. These requirements come from our regulators and are intended to prevent abuse of the financial system.

What details do you need to collect?

The exact rules vary by country, but we typically need to collect details on:

  1. The individual creating the Stripe account
  2. The business associated with the Stripe account
  3. Any individuals who ultimately own or control that business

If you sign up for a Stripe account directly, we will prompt you to provide the details required in your country when activating your Stripe account. We may also reach out periodically to confirm that information on your account is still accurate.

If you would like to update the details associated with your existing Stripe account, please log in and fill out this form to let us know which information needs to be changed.

Do I need to share details on my customers?

Stripe is only required to collect and maintain information on Stripe account holders. However, we may reach out for more context on individual payments.

What if I’m creating Custom Connect accounts on behalf of my users?

As your users are also Stripe account holders, you’ll need to work with Stripe to meet all KYC obligations. We’ve designed Connect to accept KYC information directly through the API.

You can find the required information fields for users in each country by selecting the relevant country from the required verification information menu or by using the Country Specs API.

How will you use the personal data collected?

We take privacy and security very seriously. Our Privacy Policy explains how and for what purposes we collect, use, retain, disclose, and safeguard any personal data you provide to us.
