Stripe is changing how we handle currency conversion fees for refunds.

What’s changing?

FAQs

Returned currency conversion fees

Currently, Stripe charges a currency conversion fee and returns it if the transaction is refunded. Starting October 15th, 2023, we will no longer return the currency conversion fee to you for refunded transactions. You can view your refunds in the Dashboard.

FAQs

Why will the fee no longer be returned?

Stripe enables you to accept money from customers in 135+ currencies and automatically convert purchases into your primary currency. In order to convert currencies, Stripe incurs fees from third-party partners.

When a converted transaction is refunded, Stripe converts the refunded transaction back into the purchaser's original currency. Historically, Stripe has been covering the costs to do so on behalf of users. To account for the conversion cost, we will no longer return the currency conversion fee applied to the original transaction.

How can I calculate the impact of these updates to my business?

The best way to approximate the impact these changes might have to your business is to use the Stripe Dashboard.

  1. View your refund history in your dashboard by navigating to Payments and select All transactions
  2. Use the Filter to select “type” = “refunds” and "currency" = any currency that requires conversion
  3. Identify refunded transactions that involve currency conversion
  4. Calculate returned fees for prior transactions, using the currency conversion fees detailed on our pricing page
