Legal Entity Sharing

What is Legal Entity Sharing?

Legal Entity Sharing enables Stripe merchants to reuse existing Legal Entities (such as your legal company or business details) when onboarding new accounts. Any updates made to the legal entity on either Stripe Account will sync to the other account.

For example, a merchant may create a Stripe account with Platform A and later decide to also onboard with Platform B. On Platform B they create a second Stripe account that shares the same legal entity as Platform A, which syncs these company/business details across both accounts.

We recommend using Legal Entity Sharing when you are creating multiple Stripe accounts for the same registered business entity

How does onboarding work?

  1. You onboard with the first platform (the experience will look different depending on the platform’s Connect Onboarding integration).
  2. If this is your first Stripe account, you will be prompted to secure your account with 2FA. You must use the same login credentials for any subsequent account for which you want to use Legal Entity Sharing.
  3. Complete Stripe onboarding to create the first account. This includes the Tell us about your business section which asks for information about your legal entity. You also must set yourself, or someone at your business who is authorized, as the “Administrator” (owner of your Stripe account).
  4. If you decide to use a second platform, you can use Legal Entity Sharing by creating a second account with the same login credentials you used for the first account.
  5. Click the legal entity you would like to use for this account, which links the existing Stripe account.
    1. In some Onboarding flows, we copy other details from the original account when using Legal Entity Sharing. These may include external accounts, the business profile, and support information. This information is copied, not shared, so updates to these details don't sync across accounts.
  6. After completing Legal Entity Sharing, you might need to enter more information.
  7. After onboarding is complete, you should have two Stripe accounts that share one legal entity.

What if I need to make updates to my Stripe account details?

You can update your legal entity details in multiple ways depending on your account’s configuration: the Stripe dashboard, the Express dashboard, or your platform’s dashboard if they have integrated the Account management Connect embedded component.

Any legal entity changes that you make in one account are reflected in all of your accounts sharing the same legal entity. You will see a header at the top of the page that warns you before making this change.

To update the administrator on your Stripe account, follow the instructions in Change the owner of a Stripe account.
