# Why do I need to verify my identity in the Dashboard?

You may be asked to verify your identity when making changes to your account in the Dashboard. This is called step-up authentication—an important security measure that protects your account from fraudsters.
## Having trouble?
If you're having trouble completing step-up authentication but are still signed in, you may find these resources helpful depending on the type of authentication challenge.
* Forgot your password?
* Can’t complete two-step authentication?
  * Having trouble with SMS?
  * Having trouble with your authenticator app?
* Having trouble with email link verification?
* Having trouble uploading your ID?
## Can I remove this requirement?
The step-up authentication requirement can't be removed—it's in place to protect your account. However, there are some things you can do to make it easier.
* Add a passkey, security key, Touch ID, or Windows Hello for two-step authentication. These authentication methods are more secure and allow you to complete step-up authentication in fewer steps.
* After completing step-up authentication, you may not be prompted again for a short period—use this window to make multiple changes at once. Note that some changes to sensitive settings may still be temporarily restricted.
* Make sure you keep the step-up authentication popup open when completing challenges. Closing it early will require you to start over.
