# What is Gross volume by cohort?

**Gross volume by cohort** shows how much each group of customers pays you over time. A cohort is a group of customers whose first successful payment was in the same month. The chart shows the latest 12 cohorts and excludes customers who were part of earlier cohorts.
**Month 1** is the month of a cohort's first payments. The chart options let you switch between **cumulative** (a running total) and **monthly** volume. The date range and comparison settings on your home page don't change this chart.
## How is Gross volume by cohort calculated?
Gross volume uses the same definition as the **Gross volume** chart on your home page. It is the estimated volume from payments that settle to your Stripe balance. Fees, refunds, and disputes don't reduce it. The chart updates once a day.
Stripe uses the customer on each payment or, for Stripe payments without one, the guest customer. Otherwise, Stripe matches the payment by card or payment method, or counts it as a separate customer. A buyer who pays without a customer record, for example with different cards, can appear in more than one cohort.
Stripe converts other currencies to your default currency using estimated exchange rates. Stripe payments convert from the currency they settle in, and reported payments from the currency your customer paid in.
## What are reported payments?
Reported payments are payments you process outside of Stripe and report to Stripe, for example with the [Payment Records API](https://docs.stripe.com/payments/payment-records).
## Who can see Gross volume by cohort?
The chart is only available in live mode. It isn't available for Connect platforms, accounts controlled by a platform, or Organization home pages.
