WeChat Pay and Alipay Executive Orders

On January 5, 2021, U.S. President Trump issued an Executive Order which would have impacted the use of WeChat Pay and Alipay as soon as February 19, 2021, but required additional action by the U.S. government in order to take effect. On June 9, President Biden revoked the company-specific orders and initiated a new security review process. As the initial Orders have been revoked, WeChat Pay and Alipay payments can continue to be accepted by U.S. businesses, and in USD.

We continue to monitor legal developments and will update our users if the situation develops further. Meanwhile, businesses who use WeChat Pay and Alipay may wish to also integrate other payment methods frequently used by customers in Asia.

Previously, following a separate August 6, 2020 U.S. Executive Order on WeChat, Stripe suspended WeChat Pay for U.S.-based Stripe businesses at 04:01 UTC on September 20. In response to an injunction issued on September 20, we then re-enabled WeChat Pay pending a final judicial decision.
