# Treasury direct debits

A direct debit is an ACH payment that an external party—such as a payroll provider, supplier, or tax authority—pulls from your Stripe financial account using its account and routing numbers. The external party initiates the collection; adding a vendor in the Stripe Dashboard doesn't send a payment.
Direct debits are available for eligible Treasury direct business accounts in the United States and use USD. This is different from using ACH debit to add money to your financial account from an external bank account.
For more information, see [Treasury direct debits](https://docs.stripe.com/treasury/direct-debits).
## Enable or disable direct debits
Direct debit settings apply separately to each financial account.
1. In the Stripe [Dashboard](https://dashboard.stripe.com/), open **Balances**.
1. Select the relevant financial account and its USD balance.
1. Select **More**, then **ACH direct debits**.
1. Turn **Allow ACH debits from the selected account (USD)** on or off.
1. Select **Save**. If you are turning debits off, review the confirmation and select **Turn off**.
Turning direct debits off blocks upcoming and scheduled collections from all vendors for that financial account, including legitimate collections. Your saved vendors and limits remain available if you turn direct debits on again.
Turning direct debits off doesn't return a debit that has already settled or cancel an agreement with a vendor. Contact the vendor separately to cancel the underlying bill, subscription, or collection arrangement.
## Manage vendor authorizations
You can manage vendors under **ACH direct debits > Vendor list**. The vendor’s ACH Company ID identifies the party originating the collection. Ask the vendor to confirm its Company ID if you don't know it.
Choose the option that matches how you want the account to work:
* **Approve listed vendors:** Only vendors with a matching active authorization can debit the financial account. If the approved-vendor list is empty, no vendors match.
* **Set debit limits for listed vendors:** Vendors that are not listed can still debit the account, subject to the default limit and other checks. Listed vendors can have their own limits.
Adding a vendor doesn't automatically restrict the account to approved vendors. Removing a vendor also doesn't block that vendor when authorizations are optional.
## Set debit limits
The standard default is **50,000 USD per debit**. You can set a different default of up to **500,000 USD per debit** in the Dashboard.
A vendor-specific limit takes precedence over the financial-account default, whether it's higher or lower. If a vendor doesn't have its own limit, the financial-account default applies.
These limits apply to each debit, not to a daily or monthly total. Available funds and other account checks still apply.
## Troubleshoot a rejected or missing direct debit
If a vendor says that a direct debit was rejected, review:
* Whether direct debits were enabled for the affected financial account when the vendor attempted the collection
* Whether vendor authorizations are required
* Whether the authorization uses the vendor’s correct ACH Company ID
* The vendor-specific and financial-account limits
* Whether sufficient funds were available when the collection was processed
* Any recent changes to the account’s direct debit settings
Changing a setting doesn't retry a failed collection. After resolving the issue, coordinate any new collection attempt directly with the vendor.
If the settings don't explain the rejection, the transaction is missing, or your balance appears incorrect, [contact Stripe Support](https://support.stripe.com/contact). Include the vendor, amount, attempted date and time, visible error, and transaction ID if available. You don't need a transaction ID to ask us to investigate a missing collection.
## Dispute an unrecognized direct debit
If you don't recognize a settled direct debit:
1. Open **Balances** in the Stripe Dashboard.
1. Select the relevant financial account and its USD balance.
1. Open the debit from **Recent activity** or **View more**.
1. Review the amount, date, vendor information, ACH Company ID, and **Disputable until** timestamp.
1. If **Dispute** is available, select it, review the details, and submit the dispute immediately.
The dispute period is one business day from settlement. Always use the **Disputable until** timestamp shown on the transaction. If **Dispute** remains available, submit the dispute immediately even if more than one business day has elapsed.
After submission, open the original debit and select **View dispute** to track the request. Submitting a dispute doesn't guarantee that the return will succeed.
If the deadline has passed, the Dispute action is missing before the displayed deadline, or the submission fails, [contact Stripe Support](https://support.stripe.com/contact) immediately. Include the amount, date, vendor information, transaction ID if available, displayed deadline or error, and why you believe the debit was unauthorized or incorrect.
## Track a dispute
Open the original debit and select **View dispute**:
* **Submitted:** The request is processing, typically for a few business days. This doesn't mean the return has succeeded.
* **Succeeded:** The return succeeded. Check the activity and balance of the financial account linked to the original debit for the returned funds.
* **Failed:** Contact Stripe Support so we can review the failure and determine whether any further action is available.
Contact Stripe Support if a dispute remains submitted longer than expected, succeeds without a visible credit, or fails. Include the original debit and dispute IDs if they are available and a screenshot of the relevant status or account activity.
## Fees
Stripe doesn't charge a per-transaction fee for a direct debit or for disputing a direct debit on your Stripe Treasury account. This doesn't mean that every Treasury product or vendor charge is free.
If you see an unexplained charge, contact Stripe Support and include the line-item description.
