Stripe Terminal offers support for on-reader tipping for merchants.

With on-reader tipping, you can display suggested tip amounts on your reader before your customer presents their credit card. The reader will show three suggestions based on the configuration you set.

You can configure the three suggested tips as 1) percentages; 2) amounts; 3) smart tips, where the reader dynamically shows three percentages or three amounts depending on the size of the pre-tip amount. A customer can also optionally specify a custom tip amount or can choose to leave no tip.

• Enabling and customizing tipping does require engineering work and familiarity with our APIs. It can not be configured on the dashboard or the reader itself.
• Connect platforms can choose to enable tipping for all connected accounts or by location. While it can not specifically be enabled on the reader level, if you would just like tipping to show on one reader, you can assign the reader to a location.
• If you need to specify that the tipping option should only show for certain products or services (For example, a salon that sells haircuts and bottles of shampoo might want their customer to know that they calculate percentage-based tips on haircuts only), please leverage Tip-eligible amounts.
• If you would like to hide the tip selection screen on your reader for individual transactions or temporarily for all transactions (scenario: a restaurant might want to accept tips on the reader for takeout orders, but only allow on-receipt tips for dine-in customers), you can leverage the skip-tipping to enable this.
