# Taxes on Stripe fees and products for businesses based in the United States

## Why am I being charged sales tax?
Stripe is required by law to charge sales tax on certain products and services. Your business address determines whether the products and services you purchase from Stripe are subject to United States state and local taxes, and the applicable tax rates. In order for Stripe to charge sales tax accurately, ensure that your business address is up to date in the [Business Settings](https://dashboard.stripe.com/account) section of your Dashboard.
For the sale of physical goods, such as Terminal hardware and accessories, the applicable sales tax may be determined based on the ship-to address or fulfiment address of each order.
---
## What products and services are impacted by state and local sales taxes?
The taxability of products and services varies by location. Payment processing services are generally not subject to US sales tax.
Fraud prevention products like Radar and Software-as-a-service (SaaS) products, which include Billing, Stripe Tax and Stripe Sigma, may be subject to US sales tax depending on the state or local taxing authority. Local taxing authorities may also charge sales tax on certain products where the state does not. Sales tax rates may change, which could result in fluctuations on your invoice.
Physical goods, like Terminal hardware and accessories, are generally taxable in all states that have sales tax.
In order for Stripe to charge sales tax accurately, ensure that your business address under [Business Settings](https://dashboard.stripe.com/account) in your Dashboard is up to date.
---
## What's the sales tax rate being charged?
Sales tax rates on Stripe's products and services vary by state and locality, and are determined according to your business address, ship-to address, or fulfiment address. Sales tax rates may change over time.

## How do I see the taxes I'm being charged?
If sales tax applies to you, it'll be listed separately on your monthly invoice or on the Checkout summary after entering your shipping address for the purchase of physical goods. Your monthly invoice will include the fee and tax amounts collected for each Stripe product.
You can download the monthly invoice from the [Documents](https://dashboard.stripe.com/account/documents) section of your Dashboard (Settings > Reporting and Documents > Documents). Learn more about the global taxation of Stripe fees.
You can also view a transaction-by-transaction breakdown for taxes on products and services by downloading your [balance summary report](https://stripe.com/docs/reports/balance) from the [Reports](https://dashboard.stripe.com/reports/balance) section of your Dashboard (Reporting > Reports > Balance summary). These taxes are categorised as fees on the export.

## How can I request an exemption?
If you're an organisation or business with a verified sales tax exemption, send your proof of exemptions to support@stripe.com and include your account ID in your message.
Ensure the following:
1. You have the correct type of exemption. Documents such as business licences, certificate of registrations, IRS determination letters (unless required by state law), or Form W-9s are generally not considered acceptable documentation for state or local sales tax exemption.
1. The entity name on the certificate matches the name on your Stripe account.
1. You're submitting an exemption certificate or card for the state that corresponds to the business address on your Stripe account.
   - If you're ordering Terminal hardware and accessories, submit an exemption certificate or card for the state that corresponds to each order's ship-to address.
1. All required boxes and fields are properly ticked or filled in.
1. If applicable, add Stripe's full name and address to your proof of exemption as the seller:
   - Stripe, Inc.
   - 354 Oyster Point Blvd
   - South San Francisco, CA 94080
1. If applicable, the certificate is signed and dated).
