# Tap to Pay on Android security patch requirements

To use a device with Tap to Pay on Android, it must have received a security patch within the last 12 months. Devices that haven't been updated within this window won't be able to accept Tap to Pay payments.
This requirement aligns with Google's Play Integrity standards and helps ensure payment security for merchants and cardholders.
## How to check your device's security patch level
1. Open **Settings** on your Android device.
1. Tap **About phone** (or **About device**).
1. Look for Android security patch level — this shows the date of the most recent security update installed on your device.
On some devices, this may be under **Settings** > **System** > **About phone** or **Settings** > **Software information**.
## What to do if your patch is outdated
- Update your device: Go to **Settings** > **System** > **System update** (path varies by manufacturer) and install any available updates.
- If no update is available: Some older devices stop receiving security patches from the manufacturer. Reach out to the manufacturer to confirm if there are any available updates, and if not and your device's last available patch is more than 12 months old, you'll need to use a different device for Tap to Pay on Android.
## What happens if your device is outdated
When attempting to connect to the Tap to Pay reader, you'll receive an error indicating that your device's security patch is out of date. The error code is `terminal_unsupported_android_patch`. You won't be able to accept Tap to Pay payments until the device is updated or replaced with a device that meets the security patch requirement.
## Which devices are affected?
This applies to all devices using Tap to Pay on Android, including those using the Stripe Dashboard app.
