In the United States: Terminal processes co-branded debit transactions in the US through the credit card networks (Visa, MasterCard, Discover etc.). Cards in the United States run across credit rails rather than debit rails, and typically no PIN is required for cardholder verification. In the event a PIN is required (for example, for cards issued internationally), the Stripe Reader S700 and WisePOS E readers will prompt for a PIN. Stripe Reader M2 will not prompt for a PIN, however this does not impede general acceptance as PINless transactions are allowed to be run on readers without a PINpad. Co-branded debit cards (which support both a local debit network and the Visa, Mastercard or Discover networks) are accepted, and make up the vast majority of debit cards issued in the US. However, debit cards that do not support Visa, Mastercard, or Discover co-branding are not.
In Canada: Terminal processes Interac Debit transactions as PIN debit. Both credit card and Interac debit payments may require customers to enter their PIN on the card reader to complete the transaction.
In Europe and Asia Pacific: Terminal processes co-branded debit transactions through the credit card networks and will prompt for PIN when required. In European markets, there are regulatory requirements around PIN authentication for transactions. Please view PIN and Strong Customer Authentication requirements here.
In Australia: eftpos is the interbank network that handles routing of debit payments in Australia. A majority of consumer debit cards in Australia are branded with an eftpos logo and co-branded with Visa or Mastercard. Terminal processes co-branded debit transactions through both the credit card networks and eftpos, depending on the type of transaction. Terminal also supports mono-branded debit cards. In both cases, the Terminal will prompt for PIN when required.
In New Zealand: eftpos is the interbank network that handles routing of debit payments in New Zealand. Consumer debit cards in New Zealand are branded with an eftpos logo and may also be co-branded with Visa or Mastercard. Stripe can support co-branded eftpos over the co-brand rails.
