# Set a trusted location for your Stripe account

A trusted location is an area you choose, where you sign in from often. When you sign in to the Stripe Dashboard from within that area, you may be asked to verify your identity less often. When you sign in from outside it, you might see more verification prompts.
## How a trusted location works
- Stripe detects where you're signing in from based on your IP address. It doesn't use your device's GPS or your browser's location.
- Sign-ins from within your trusted area might need fewer verification steps.
- Sign-ins from outside your trusted area might need extra verification, such as a two-step authentication code. A trusted location never blocks you from signing in.
- You can set one trusted location. It applies to your user profile, not to a specific Stripe account.
- If you don't set a trusted location, your sign-in experience stays the same.
## Set or update your trusted location
1. Go to **Settings** > [**Personal details**](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/user).
1. Click **Set trusted location**.
1. The map opens at your IP-based approximate location. Drag the pin to the place you want to trust. The circle shows the area that counts as your trusted area.
1. Click **Set location**. You might need to verify your identity to save the change.
To change it later, click **Edit** > **Update trusted location** and move the pin. Each change is recorded in your [Security history](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/security_history).
## Remove your trusted location
Click **Edit** > **Remove trusted location**.
## Using a VPN
A VPN, proxy, or corporate network makes your connection appear to come from the location of its server, not where you physically are. If that server is outside your trusted area, Stripe treats the sign-in as coming from outside your trusted location, even when you're at home or in the office.
* Choose the area where your connection usually appears to originate, which might be the location of your VPN or office network rather than your physical location. If your VPN lets you choose a server, try one near your trusted location. If it’s safe and practical to do so, you can also disconnect from the VPN before signing in.
## Traveling
When you travel outside your trusted area, Stripe asks for verification as usual, or more often.
- You don't need to update your trusted location for short trips. Set it to where you usually work, and update it if you move.
