Some cards are issued with online PIN capabilities, where the PIN data is verified by the issuer when an authorization is run. Stripe Terminal supports this type of verification in non-US markets where Online PIN is common for issuers - including markets in EMEA and APAC.
Some cards are issued with an offline PIN that can be verified directly on the card. Stripe Terminal supports this type of verification with our PIN-enabled readers (BBPOS WisePOS E), but Stripe Reader M2 or the BBPOS Chipper 2X BT does not have a PIN pad and cannot support either online or offline PIN verification.
During the authorization process, the card’s issuing bank ultimately decides whether the card is approved or declined.
International cards that get declined for in-person transactions with Terminal may be approved for online payments, so you can collect card details and process as card-not-present instead. This is because there is no requirement for PIN for online, card-not-present transactions.
