PayPal settlement choice

To accept PayPal payments, your Stripe account must be based in the EU (except for Hungary), Liechtenstein, Norway, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland. Please review the documentation for a full list of requirements.

When you enable PayPal in your dashboard, you’ll be prompted to choose where to keep the revenue from PayPal payments*. If you choose to add funds from PayPal payments to your Stripe balance, you’ll be able to access the money from your Stripe Dashboard, similar to other payment methods on Stripe. If you choose to add funds from PayPal payments to your PayPal balance. Stripe will have no access to the revenue from PayPal sales. This means that you will need to manage your payouts from the PayPal account separately.

We recommend that you choose to add funds from PayPal payments to your Stripe balance to be able to manage funds using Stripe.

* If you are a Connect platform, your funds will always settle on Stripe, similar to other payment methods. For Connect platforms interested in accepting PayPal payments, refer to PayPal payment method availability.

What is the difference between settling PayPal payments to Stripe vs settling PayPal payments to PayPal

Money flow and payouts

  1. When settling funds from PayPal payments to your Stripe account, you’ll be able to access the money from your Stripe balance according to your payouts schedule, same as for other payment methods at Stripe.
  2. When settling funds from PayPal payments to your PayPal account, Stripe will have no access to these funds, and they must be paid out via PayPal.

Refunds & Disputes

  1. When settling funds from PayPal payments to your Stripe account, if you want to refund a payment or need to cover the funds from a dispute, the funds available in your Stripe account are used, similar to other payment methods at Stripe.
  2. When settling funds from PayPal payments to your PayPal account, you can still manage refunds and disputes from your Stripe Dashboard, but the relevant funds are the ones on your PayPal account. Stripe doesn’t transfer any funds from your PayPal account to your Stripe account. For that reason, make sure that you always have a positive balance in your Stripe account to cover expected refund amounts or potential disputes.

Dashboard experience

  1. When settling funds from PayPal payments to your Stripe account, there will be no difference in the Stripe Dashboard experience compared to other payment methods at Stripe.
  2. When settling funds from PayPal payments to your PayPal account:
    • The balance transaction linked to the corresponding payment will have a zero amount regardless of the payment as funds settle in your PayPal balance, and no money goes to your Stripe balance.
    • In addition to that, the Gross and Net volume charts will not reflect your sales volume from PayPal if you choose to settle your funds on a PayPal account. If that’s the case, we recommend using Payment methods financial report to track the volume from PayPal sales.
    • The payment details view will also be different if you decide to keep the revenue from PayPal payments to your PayPal account. The “Net” value will reflect the change on the net volume of your Stripe balance, which will be a negative value of the fee amount that Stripe takes for the payment.

Can I change my settlement choice after I accept a PayPal payment?

Yes, you can initiate the process from the Stripe Dashboard.

    • Go to the Payment Methods Settings page
    • Find PayPal settings
    • Click the “Contact Support to change” link. You’ll be redirected to file a support ticket.
    • File a support ticket to request a change.
    • It usually takes up to 72 hours to process your request. The change will be reflected in the PayPal settings once processed.

    Can I move funds between my Stripe and PayPal balance?

    No. If you select to add your PayPal sales volume to Stripe balance, the full amount of sales minus PayPal fees will be automatically added to your Stripe account. If you select to keep your PayPal sales volume in your PayPal balance, you’ll need to manage the payouts from your PayPal balance manually.
