# Payout paused due to pending withdrawal for negative balance

If you have a negative balance and Stripe has initiated a withdrawal to bring your account back to positive, any upcoming payouts in the currency being withdrawn will be paused to allow time for the withdrawal to complete. If your payouts are delayed for this reason, you'll see a banner in your Dashboard: **A withdrawal from your bank account is pending.**
Dashboard banner: A withdrawal from your bank account is pending.
Once the withdrawal is complete, your payouts resume according to your account's [payout schedule](https://stripe.com/docs/payouts#payout-schedule). Withdrawals typically take around three business days to clear.
You can see the dates and amounts of the withdrawal as well as your upcoming payouts in your [Balances overview](https://dashboard.stripe.com/balance/overview). Click the **All activity** tab to see any pending activity.
## Can I be exempted from a payout delay?
No. Once Stripe initiates a withdrawal from your bank account, payouts resume on your regular schedule after the withdrawal succeeds, typically within three to five business days.
## I see a successful debit on my bank statement. Why haven't my payouts resumed?
Once the withdrawal completes, your payouts resume automatically. This may take one to two days.
## Is this a one-off occurrence, or will it affect my payout schedule permanently?
Payouts are paused only while your account balance is negative and resume once the withdrawal is complete and the negative balance is cleared. If your balance returns to negative, payouts may pause again.
## How can I avoid future pauses?
Reduce the frequency of your automatic payouts to allow for a positive balance buffer. Adjust your payout schedule via the [Dashboard](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/payouts) on the **Business settings** page under **Bank accounts and currencies** > **Payout schedule**.
## The withdrawal has failed. What can I do?
[Add funds to your Stripe account](https://stripe.com/docs/add-funds) by setting up a bank or wire transfer from your Dashboard.
If you prefer Stripe to debit your bank account to cover the negative balance, [update your bank account information](https://dashboard.stripe.com/settings/payouts) with an account that Stripe is permitted to debit to cover your current and future negative balances.
