Starting June 1, 2024, Stripe is making updates to the pricing structure for SEPA Direct Debit.
Previously, there was one fee that applied to both SEPA Direct Debit disputes and failed payments. Starting June 1, 2024, disputes and failed payments will have separate fees. The dispute fee will increase and the failed payment fee will decrease. Most businesses will see cost savings as a result of this change. Please see the FAQs below or our website for more details on pricing by country.
We’ve heard from businesses that the fee for failed payments is high so we’ve adjusted our pricing structure based on that feedback. Failed payments account for the majority of SEPA Direct Debit disputes & failed payments for most merchants and because of that, we estimate that most businesses will see cost savings.
These changes apply to all users on Stripe’s standard pricing for SEPA Direct Debit. If you’re on a custom pricing plan for SEPA Direct Debit, there will be no changes to your current pricing.
The best way to calculate the impact these changes might have to your business is to use the Stripe Dashboard.
If you use Connect with Standard accounts, these changes will apply to the Stripe fees for your connected accounts. Stripe will automatically notify your connected accounts about the changes. There’s no action needed from you, but you are welcome to share additional communication with them about the change.
If you use Connect with Custom or Express accounts, these changes will apply to your Stripe fees starting June 1, 2024. You are responsible for any updates to your own pricing in line with these changes, and for communicating with your users.
Here are some actions you can take to reduce the number of SEPA Direct Debit disputes you receive and reduce your costs.
Educate your customers about timelines for SEPA Direct Debit refunds. Refunds through SEPA Direct Debit typically take 3-4 business days. Clearly and proactively communicating this refund timeline to your customers can reduce the risk of disputes.
Perform stronger Know Your Customer (KYC) processes by asking customers for an official copy of their IBAN supplied by their banks, rather than collecting their IBAN through a payment form. This is common practice in the EU and can reduce chargebacks resulting from incorrect bank details.
Optimize your internal flows by using a third-party bank account verification and conducting a “penny test”: Send a one-cent transaction to the consumer via bank transfer (e.g., Sepa Credit, iDeal, Giropay).
This support page provides you with more details on the notice we sent you describing changes to certain fees. That notice is a legal notice sent to Stripe users, even those who have unsubscribed from optional marketing notices. You cannot unsubscribe from legal notices, but if you’d prefer not to receive any further legal notices from Stripe, you can close your account by following these steps.
Your continued use of Stripe's services after June 1, 2024 is subject to these fee changes. Any termination rights you have under your agreement with us are unaffected by this change.
There’s no action necessary for you at this time and these changes will automatically apply to your business and/or your connected accounts on June 1, 2024.
