# Instant currency conversion

With [instant currency conversion](https://docs.stripe.com/instant-currency-conversion), you can convert funds between currencies directly from your Stripe Dashboard. This is available for funds in both your payments balance and your financial account. A conversion fee applies, included in the exchange rate shown at the time of conversion.

## How to convert funds
1. Go to the [Balances](https://dashboard.stripe.com/balances) page, then click **Convert**.
1. On the conversion details page, select the currencies to convert and enter the amount.
1. Click **Submit**. You’ll see the funds instantly available in your balance.
Converted funds appear in the target currency balance immediately and will pay out on your normal schedule.
For supported currencies by region, see [instant currency conversion documentation](https://docs.stripe.com/instant-currency-conversion).
## Common scenarios
### I have a balance but no bank account in that currency
If you have funds in a currency but no bank account set up to receive payouts in that currency, your balance won't pay out automatically. This can happen if you removed a bank account or settlement currency
How to fix it:
* Option 1 (recommended): Convert the balance to a currency where you already have a bank account using the steps above. The funds will pay out on your normal schedule.
* Option 2: Add a bank account in that currency via Settings > Bank accounts and scheduling.
### My balance is below the minimum payout threshold
Some currencies have a minimum payout amount when using [multi-currency settlement](https://docs.stripe.com/payouts/multicurrency-settlement). If your balance is below this threshold, Stripe won't automatically send a payout.
This typically happens when you have a small remaining balance from old transactions and you're no longer actively receiving payments in that currency.
How to fix it:
Convert the balance to your primary settlement currency using instant currency conversion. Once converted, the funds are combined with your existing balance and will pay out normally.
Example: You have $48 USD sitting in your account with a $250 threshold. Your primary currency is CAD. Convert the $48 USD to CAD, and it will be paid out with your next regular CAD payout.
Other options:
* Wait for more payments in that currency until the balance reaches the minimum.
* Add a bank account in a region with a lower threshold for that currency.
### I need to cover a negative balance in another currency
If a refund or chargeback created a negative balance in one currency but you have a positive balance in another, you can convert funds to cover it:
1. Go to **Balances** in the [Dashboard](https://dashboard.stripe.com)
1. Click **Convert** next to the currency with a positive balance
1. Select the currency with the negative balance as the target
1. Convert enough to cover the negative amount
1. Confirm the conversion
The converted funds will be applied to your negative balance immediately.
Example: You issued a USD refund but your USD balance is -50. You have GBP 200 GBP. Convert enough GBP to USD to cover the USD -50, and the pending refund will go through.
If you don't have a positive balance in another currency, the negative will be covered by future incoming payments or auto-debit from your bank account. See Fix the negative balance on your account
### I'm closing my account and have small balances in multiple currencies
If you want to withdraw all funds before closing your account, convert all small balances into one currency first. This ensures you can withdraw everything in a single payout without being blocked by minimum thresholds.

## Troubleshooting
### I can't see the Convert button
* Instant currency conversion may not be available in your country yet. Check the [supported regions](https://docs.stripe.com/instant-currency-conversion).
* It's only available for users with Dashboard access.
### I just topped up my payments balance but can't convert it
Top-up funds are not eligible for instant currency conversion. Only funds that arrived through payment processing (charges, transfers from platforms, etc.) can be converted. This does not apply to Treasury.
### The conversion rate seems different from what I expected
Stripe applies the mid-market rate based on pricing data from third-party service providers. This ensures that you're getting a competitive and fair exchange rate for your currency conversions.
### I accidentally completed a currency conversion exchange. Can I cancel or convert back without incurring FX fees again?
No, conversions cannot be cancelled once confirmed. The process is instant. If you need to convert back to the original currency, you'll need to initiate a new conversion, which will be subject to the standard conversion fee again.
