# Disputes on a Refunded Transaction FAQ

## Can I receive a dispute for a transaction that has already been fully refunded?
Yes. Cardholders can still initiate a dispute, also known as a chargeback, even if a refund has been processed. The most common reasons for this include:
* The refund and the dispute were processed at nearly the same time, meaning the bank was unaware of the refund when they initiated the claim.
* The issuing bank didn't verify the transaction’s refund status before filing the dispute.
### What are my options for responding to these disputes?
* **Smart Disputes**: If you're enrolled in Smart Disputes, Smart Disputes builds the defense for you by assembling an evidence packet using existing refund data, like the Acquirer Reference Number, or ARN, if available. The Smart Dispute fee is waived when using this defense for eligible transactions you fully refunded through Stripe. This includes eligible disputes on payments made through supported payment methods, such as PayPal or Klarna.
  * If you have auto-submissions enabled, Stripe automatically submits the Smart Disputes-generated evidence packet before the dispute deadline with no action required.
  * If you don't have auto-submit enabled you can still submit the Smart Disputes assembled evidence packet through the [Dashboard](https://dashboard.stripe.com/disputes?statuses%5B0%5D=needs_response&statuses%5B1%5D=warning_needs_response&evidence_due_by%5Bgt%5D=1769673600&sort=evidence_due_by&order=asc) prior to the deadline.
* **Manual Counter**: You can submit your own response through the [Dashboard](https://dashboard.stripe.com/disputes?statuses%5B0%5D=needs_response&statuses%5B1%5D=warning_needs_response&evidence_due_by%5Bgt%5D=1769673600&sort=evidence_due_by&order=asc) or API. If you choose this option, you must assemble and submit the relevant evidence, such as refund details, prior to the deadline. A fee for countering the dispute manually applies.
