Starting with API version 2020-03-02, you can set how your invoice numbers are sequenced at the account level, which is required in some European countries.
You can go to your Settings then open the Invoices template page.
From there, you can switch from "customer" to "account" level or vice versa for your invoices, as demonstrated below.
If you can't see the option to edit your Invoice numbering in your Invoice template settings, it’s likely your account is using a default API version from prior to 2020-03-02. You can follow the guide in our docs to upgrade your API version, but we strongly discourage changing your API version without the help of a developer.
Once you have switched from "customer" to "account" level for your next invoices in your Settings, you can modify the following:
Prefix: Name for your invoice sequencing
Sequence: Number of the next invoice that will be created under that sequencing
This way, you can ensure your next invoice with Stripe will follow your previous invoice number. This is particularly useful if you are migrating to Stripe.
The default behaviour depends on the country in which your Stripe account is based.
In the EU and in the UK, account-level prefixes are used by default for any account created after 29 February 2020. In all other countries, customer-level prefixes are the default.
If you modify the default behaviour, it will only apply on new invoices; existing invoices will not be affected.
You have the ability to be compliant with this feature, but ultimately it is your responsibility to ensure you are following the requirements of the legislation in your country. We have some region-specific guides on invoicing best practices below:
We cannot provide legal advice on whether your invoices are compliant or not. We advise you to seek legal help to confirm this.
You can change the public information about your business that appears on your Invoices in the Public details section of your Settings.
You can customise the appearance of your Invoices through your Branding Settings in the Dashboard.
