Below are some resources from Stripe Terminal to help your business adapt to the challenges of accepting in-person payments while implementing measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, businesses and card networks are focusing on encouraging the use of contactless payment methods to limit interaction during checkout.
Stripe Terminal card readers, the Verifone P400 and BBPOS Chipper 2X BT, both support contactless payments— for cards equipped with “tap to pay” functionality and mobile wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay).
When using a mobile wallet in the US (Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay) or a Visa card there is no transaction limit and a signature is not required.
With some contactless cards, customers can be prompted to use a Cardholder Verification Method (CVM) such as signature if they hit the following limits in the US:
Mastercard, Discover: $100 limit
American Express: $200 limit
We have made changes to the Verifone P400 display so that it will now more prominently feature the NFC / contactless logo. We hope this will foster increased adoption of contactless payments and help facilitate a healthier checkout experience.
Displaying point of sale signage with the NFC/contactless logo (such as decals and stickers) is also a proven method of encouraging contactless payment and has been shown to drive up to 2.5X more taps at checkout in the US. You can order free signage materials through Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Apple Pay, Google Pay and other external providers.
BBPOS Chipper 2X: The reader automatically turns off after 10 hours of inactivity. To turn the reader on, press and release the power button. The status light turns on to indicate power. See more instructions here for turning the reader back on and checking for pending updates.
Verifone P400: The Verifone P400 does not typically turn off except for updates. If the reader has been switched off, you can turn it on again, by connecting it to its power source. Stripe maintains the software that controls the Verifone P400 so you should not have to update it. It is best to turn the reader back on again 24 hours before you expect to use it.
