# Bulgarian lev (BGN) transition to euro (EUR)

On 1 January 2026, Bulgaria joined the Eurozone.
This means the Bulgarian lev (BGN) was deprecated in favour of the euro (EUR), and Stripe can no longer accept BGN-denominated payments, transfers or payout instructions. Any API request referencing BGN will fail with a 400 response status.
## Do I need to make changes to my Stripe integration?
If you're still processing payments, payouts or transfers in BGN, you'll need to make changes to your integration.
**Payments**
If you use the Payment Intents, Checkout Sessions, Payment Link or Charges APIs, update your integration to use EUR instead of BGN. For instance, when creating Payment Intents, you should pass `eur` instead of `bgn` in the `currency` field.
**Products and Prices**
If you use Product and Price to define prices for Checkout or Payment Link, you'll need to create new Prices in EUR instead of BGN.
If you use embedded pricing tables to display BGN-denominated products on your website, you'll need to [update those tables](https://docs.stripe.com/payments/checkout/pricing-table#update) to use products denominated in EUR.
**Billing**
If you use Stripe Billing to charge for subscriptions in BGN, you'll need to update the subscription currency to EUR.
**Transfers**
If you create BGN Transfers via the API, you'll need to update the `currency` field in your creation request to `eur`.
**Payouts**
If you create BGN Payouts via the API, you'll need to update the `currency` field in your creation request to `eur`. Most BGN-denominated bank accounts retained the same IBAN when converting to EUR, but you should confirm this with the relevant bank.
## What else changed?
**Accounts**
Stripe automatically updated the `default_currency` of Account objects from `bgn` to `eur` on 30 December 2025.
**Balances and bank accounts**
On 30 December 2025, we converted any settled BGN balances to EUR using the official fixed rate of 1.95583 BGN to 1 EUR.
If you already had both EUR and BGN bank accounts linked to Stripe, we deactivated your BGN account and started using your EUR account for payouts from 30 December 2025. If you had not yet added a EUR bank account to Stripe, we started using the bank account we previously used for BGN payouts to instruct EUR payouts from 30 December 2025.
**Fees**
Stripe started charging fees for Bulgarian merchants in euros on 1 January 2026. The existing fees were converted to EUR using the official fixed rate of 1.95583 BGN to 1 EUR.
**Refunds and Disputes**
Refunds and disputes of payments presented in BGN before 1 January 2026 started being processed in EUR on 1 January 2026.
