Updated 23 July 2021
From 28 July 2021, all international card payments made to new Indian Stripe accounts created after this date will go through 3D Secure (3DS) authentication.
Why are you introducing this measure?
In response to a recent increase in fraud rates, we’re implementing additional authentication for international card payments made to Indian businesses. 3DS requires customers to complete an additional verification step with the card issuer when paying. Payments that have been successfully authenticated using 3DS are covered by a liability shift. Should a 3DS payment be disputed as fraudulent by the cardholder, the liability shifts from you to the card issuer.
Can I opt out?
You cannot opt out at this time. We’re introducing this measure for all Indian businesses in stages. We're working to bring full Radar support to businesses in India, which will give you added protection against fraud and allow us to potentially relax 3DS authentication requirements in the future.
Will recurring payments need to go through 3DS?
New recurring payment arrangements like new subscription plans will need to go through 3DS authentication. Subsequent payments will not require 3DS.
Will this affect my conversion rate?
We expect there will be some impact to your conversion rates as some customers may not be able to complete additional verification. However, this will also lead to lower fraud and chargeback rates from your international transactions.
Do I need to make any changes to my Stripe integration?
No, you don’t need to make any changes. Your customers will be automatically routed to a 3DS flow.
Will this apply to me if I‘m using Stripe through a third-party platform?
Yes, this change will also apply to accounts using Stripe through third-party platforms. You don’t need to make any changes, however, and your customers will be automatically routed to complete 3DS authentication.
