# What is a W-9 form?

## **A W-9 form allows US taxpayers to confirm their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and details for 1099 reporting.**
A [W-9 form](https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw9.pdf) is generally used to confirm the TIN of a person or business and to establish that they are a [US taxpayer](https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/classification-of-taxpayers-for-us-tax-purposes). Unlike a W-8 form, there is only one version of the W-9 form, and it applies to both individuals and entities. Instructions explaining how to complete a W-9 form are attached to the form itself.
In general, if you or your business entity is a US taxpayer with a Social Security Number, Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, or Employer Identification Number, you’ll want to submit a W-9 form, though we recommend confirming your form choice with your tax advisor before finalizing your submission.
## **Why is this form being requested now?**
Stripe collects W-9 forms at the request of platforms that you work with. Reach out to the platform that is requesting the W-9 form if you have additional questions about why this form is being requested.
