# What is a Form W-9?

A W-9 form allows U.S. taxpayers to confirm their Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) and other information for 1099 reporting.
When you complete a Form W-9 via Stripe Express, a suggested form will be selected and pre-filled for you based on the information you previously provided for your business.
## Choosing a Form W-9
A Form W-9 is generally used to confirm the TIN of a U.S. Person or business and to establish that they are a [U.S. taxpayer](https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/classification-of-taxpayers-for-us-tax-purposes). Unlike a Form W-8, Form W-9 has one version for both individuals and entities.
Form W-9 might be the right choice if you are a U.S. taxpayer or have a U.S. business entity with a Taxpayer Identification Number, such as a Social Security number (SSN), Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN), or Employer Identification Number (EIN). We recommend confirming this choice with your tax advisor before finalizing your decision.
## Why your platform requested a Form W-9
Stripe collects W-9s at the request of the platforms you work with. Your platform might request a Form W-9 if your previously submitted form is expiring or if your account information has changed.
