# What is a Form W-8?

A Form W-8 allows non-U.S. individuals and businesses to confirm they are not U.S. taxpayers.
When you complete a Form W-8 via Stripe Express, a suggested form will be selected and pre-filled for you based on the information you previously provided for your business.
## Choosing a Form W-8
Non-U.S. individuals and businesses generally use a Form W-8 to confirm they aren’t a U.S. Person and aren’t subject to U.S. taxation. There are different variations of [the form](https://www.irs.gov/prior-year-forms-and-instructions?find=W-8&items_per_page=200) based on the filer and purpose.
If you aren’t a [U.S. taxpayer](https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/classification-of-taxpayers-for-us-tax-purposes) and your business doesn’t have a distinct U.S. entity with an Employer Identification Number, a Form W-8 might be the right choice. We recommend confirming this choice with your tax advisor before finalizing your decision.
## Why your platform requested a Form W-8
Stripe collects W-8s at the request of the platforms you work with. Your platform might request a Form W-8 if your previously submitted form is expiring or if your account information has changed.
