Guide to 1099 tax forms for SeatGeek ticket sellers

SeatGeek partners with Stripe to file 1099 tax forms that summarise your earnings or sales activities. We’ve put together some FAQs to help you learn more about 1099s, and how to use Stripe Express to review your tax information and download your tax forms.

If you have already created a Stripe Express account, you can log in to manage your tax information at connect.stripe.com/app/express.

What is a 1099 tax form?

A 1099-K form is the information return that is given to the IRS and qualifying customers and summarises gross payment transactions for US account holders. The IRS requires Payment Settlement Entities, such as SeatGeek, to report the payment volume received by US account holders. It’s provided to you and the IRS, as well as some US states, if you have $5000 USD or more in total gross sales in the previous calendar year – and you’re based in the US or are a US taxpayer.

What is Stripe Express, and how do I access it?

Stripe Express allows you to update your tax information, download your tax forms, and track your earnings. If you're a SeatGeek ticket seller and if you have $5000 USD or more in total gross sales in the previous calendar year through SeatGeek in the US, Stripe will send an email (titled “Get your SeatGeek 2024 tax forms faster by enabling e-delivery”) inviting you to create an account and log in to Stripe Express.

If you are unable to find that email, go to our Support Site where you can request a new link to be sent to your email.

If you're still unable to locate your invite email, please contact SeatGeek support for further assistance.

I no longer have access to the phone number I signed up with. How do I log in to my Stripe Express account?

If you’ve lost or updated your phone number, you can select the “I no longer have access to this phone number” option to authenticate via email and change your phone number. Check out the link below to learn more.

I earned enough to need a 1099 form in the previous calendar year. Why haven’t I received an email from Stripe?

If you earned enough to need a 1099 tax form in the previous calendar year, you should have received an email from Stripe by mid-January. If you haven't received an email by then, a paper copy of your 1099-K tax form will be posted to the postal address on file.

Emails will be sent out in phases to SeatGeek ticket sellers starting in November.

If you can’t find an email from Stripe, it’s possible that:

Please note that if you earned enough to need a 1099 form in the previous calendar year and do not receive an email from Stripe by mid-January, a paper copy of your 1099 tax form will be posted to you at the postal address on file.

When will I receive my 1099 tax form?

If you’ve agreed to e-delivery you should receive your 1099 tax form by 31 January (plus up to 10 business days for postal delivery of a paper form).

Here are a few important dates to keep in mind:

I only see a field to enter my Social Security Number (SSN) in my 1099 tax form – how do I enter my Employer Identification Number (EIN)?

SeatGeek determines the legal entity type for your business when they create your Stripe Express account. If your account’s legal entity type is currently an individual, single member LLC, or sole proprietorship your personal tax details will be used on your 1099 tax form and you will only see the option to enter an SSN, not an EIN.

To enter your business tax details and use your EIN, your legal entity type will need to be changed to a company.

Please contact SeatGeek’s support team to update your legal entity so you can enter your business tax details and your EIN in your 1099 tax form.

Keep in mind that the reverse applies as well. If your account’s legal entity type is currently a company, you will be prompted to enter an EIN. To forego this requirement, your legal entity type will need to be changed to an individual, single member LLC, or sole proprietorship.

How do I update my tax information?

Open the email from Stripe and click on the “Get started” button, which will prompt you to create a Stripe Express account. After you create an account, you’ll be able to review your tax information (e.g. name, address, and SSN or EIN) and make any necessary changes via Stripe Express. Please update your information no later than mid-January.

Please note: If you don’t agree to paperless delivery by mid-January, we’ll automatically post your 1099 tax form to the address on file, so it’s critical that your information is current, correct, and complete.

You may find that your 1099 tax form reports your SSN and you want to use your EIN (or vice-versa). If that’s the case, you’ll want to contact SeatGeek to update your legal entity information.

Please note: If you’re operating as an individual, Sole Proprietorship, or Single Member LLC, the IRS will expect to see the individual owner’s Name and SSN (as opposed to Business Name and EIN) reported on your 1099 tax form.

How can I download my 1099 tax form?

If you create a Stripe Express account and agree to paperless delivery, Stripe will email you to let you know when your 1099 tax form is available for download via Stripe Express. If you don’t agree to paperless delivery, Stripe will post you a paper copy of your 1099 tax form instead.

How do I get a corrected 1099 tax form?

If you feel you need corrections made to a 1099 tax form that has already been ‘Filed’, use the edit option in the Tax Forms page of Stripe Express. Information you edit will not appear in the 1099 tax form in the Stripe Express dashboard but it is shared with SeatGeek. You should contact SeatGeek after you’ve made the edits you want and they can assist you with a correction. Once SeatGeek ‘Files’ your correction, you will be notified via email and you will see a new 1099 tax form appear in the Stripe Express dashboard.

Please note that it can take up to 72 hours after the platform files the correction for you to be notified.
