Instacart partners with Stripe to file 1099 tax forms that summarize your earnings. We’ve put together some FAQs to help you learn more about 1099s, and how to use Stripe Express to review your tax information and download your tax forms.
What is a 1099 tax form?
A 1099-NEC form summarizes your earnings as an independent contractor in the US. It’s provided to you and the IRS, as well as some US states, if you earn $600 or more in 2021. You’ll need this form to file your taxes.
What is Stripe Express, and how do I access it?
Stripe Express allows you to review your tax information, download your tax forms, and track your earnings. If you earned $600 or more in 2021 through Instacart in the US, Stripe will send an email (titled “Confirm your tax information with Instacart”) inviting you to create an account and log in to Stripe Express.
I earned $600 or more in 2021. Why haven’t I received an email from Stripe?
If you earned $600 or more in 2021, you should expect to receive an email from Stripe by early January 2022. Emails will be sent out in phases to Shoppers from December 2021 through January 2022.
If you don’t receive an email by mid-January 2022, it’s possible that:
The email may be in your spam/junk mail folder. Please search your inbox for an email titled “Confirm your tax information with Instacart.”
Instacart does not have your most current email address on file. Please check any other email addresses you may have used to sign up for Instacart, or reach out to Instacart to update your email.
The email address associated with your Instacart account is incorrect, missing, or unable to receive mail.
Please note that if you earned $600 or more in 2021 and do not receive an email from Stripe by early January, you will be mailed a paper copy of your 1099 tax form.
When will I receive my 1099 tax form?
Your 1099 tax form will be sent to you by January 31, 2022 (note: paper forms delivered via mail may take up to an additional 10 business days).
By early January 2022: Stripe will email you instructions on how to set up a Stripe Express account. You’ll need to create an account and agree to e-delivery (i.e., agree to receive your 1099 tax form electronically via Stripe Express) to preview and download your 1099 tax form.
By January 7, 2022: Confirm your tax information (e.g., name, address, and Social Security Number or Employer Identification Number) is correct via Stripe Express, and make any necessary changes in the Instacart Shopper App.
By January 31, 2022:
Your 1099 tax form will be available to download via Stripe Express.
Your 1099 tax form will be mailed to you, if you don’t receive an email from Stripe or don’t consent to e-delivery. Please allow up to 10 business days for mail delivery.
Instacart will file your 1099 tax form with the IRS and relevant state tax authorities.
April 15, 2022: IRS deadline to file taxes. You’ll need your 1099 tax form to file your taxes.
How do I update my tax information?
You can review and edit your tax information directly in the Instacart Shopper App. You will not be able to edit your tax information in Stripe Express. Please make any changes by January 15 and reach out to Instacart through the Shopper help center if you have any questions.

How can I download my 1099 tax form?
If you create a Stripe Express account and consent to e-delivery, Stripe will email you to let you know when your 1099 tax form is available for download via Stripe Express. Before downloading your filed 1099 tax form, you’ll be prompted to provide the last four digits of the SSN that appears on your 1099 tax form. If you don’t consent to e-delivery, Stripe will mail you a paper copy of your 1099 tax form instead.

How do i get a corrected 1099 tax form?
If you feel you need corrections made to your 1099 tax form that has already been ‘Filed’, you can edit the details directly in the Instacart Shopper App and then reach out to Instacart to request a correction be made. Once Instacart ‘Files’ your correction, you will be notified via email and you will see a new 1099 tax form appear in the Stripe Express dashboard.
Please note that it can take up to 48 to 72 hours after Instacart files the correction for you to be notified. Before downloading your corrected 1099 tax form you will need to consent to e-delivery, if you haven’t already done so, and enter the last four digits of the TIN on the 1099 tax form.
If you previously did not consent to e-delivery and would prefer to have your corrected 1099 tax form mailed to you, you will need to reach out to Instacart for assistance.
Why was I emailed about a corrected 1099 tax form?
If you recently received an email informing you that you have a corrected 1099 tax form available in Stripe Express from Instacart, it is because they made an adjustment to their tax approach and have reissued 1099 forms.
